Around the Web 1-16-09

With an upcoming redesign of WorthPoint, I’ve been knee-deep in the development of a new Wordpress theme, definitely a new venture for me.  I haven’t had the opportunity to get my hands dirty and develop anything for quite awhile professionally.  While I’m putting the theme together, most of the heavy lifting is being provided by our crack staff in Columbus, OH (thanks Jason).  This effort is keeping me busy but its nice to be part of a development team again and not just managing the schedules.

I’ve ignored my RSS feeds for most of the week but slowly catching up this evening.  Here’s the ones that caught my eye and another great photo from The Upgraders group at Flickr.

By the way, you can find these bookmarks and more on the new Digital Photography Community over at Mixx.  Join me there won’t you?

Real World Review – Canon G10 – A Weighty Decision in the Point and Shoot World

I normally will not list hardware reviews but being a Canon S5 owner I am interested in it’s successor, the G10.

10 Reasons For Getting Your Kids Into Photography

My daughter took up photography without any encouragement from us but our son is less inclined.  This post shows good examples of why photography for kids can be fun and beneficial.  there is a great shot of Martin’s 10 year old son with a lens that probably larger than his head but he’s holding it like a pro.  This is a follow-up to his previous Getting Your Kids Started In Photography post (first the how, then the why).

from Change.gov, The Office of the President-elect

The official presidential portrait of Barack Obama has been released.  It was taken by the newly announced White House photographer, Pete Souza.  What makes this newsworthy for this blog is that it was the first presidential portrait taken with a digital camera, a Canon 5D MKII.  Take that Nikon!

Mixx Put Up the Good Fight

In my previous entry here I posted about the Open Web Awards for Favorite Social News and Bookmarking sites.  I was rooting for Mixx both due to being a great service but also because they are local.  Mixx took the early lead for the first few hours but then the Digg fans came out.  When the polls closed on Sunday Mixx was in 5th place with 2.5% of the total votes.

Here’s the full results:

webawards_300.gif

Mashable has closed nominations and is in the first round of voting for the Open Web Awards for Social Networking sites.
Voting for this round will last until Sunday December 16th at 11:59
PST.  The top 3 vote getters will move on with the awards ceremony to
be held at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco on January 10th.

There are 10 nominees:  Blinklist, del.icio.us, Digg, Mixx, Newsvine, Propeller, Reddit, StumbleUpon, Wikio.com, and Wish Done.
Mixx
While I wish all of them the best of luck I hope those of you reading this will support Mixx.  Sujoy Singha posted a review of Mixx
for those of you that have not looked at it yet.  If you have not I
suggest you do, chances are you’ll drop your current service for it.

Edit:  Bill Kocik just twittered about a cool Mixx fan video on YouTube.
Enjoy:
