Prepping with Flickr to Shoot the Flaunt Runway Event

Let me start off by telling you what has me excited this week.  Heather Goss, the Managing and Arts Editor at DCist.com, has invited Shawn Duffy and I to shoot the upcoming Flaunt Runway Event at the Honfleur Gallery.

This spring, the Honfleur Gallery will premiere Flaunt: Photography & Fashion Collaboration, a special exhibition showcasing emerging local talent in photography and fashion design. To highlight the synergy between the two mediums, the show will feature two events: an opening launch on Saturday, April 25, 2009, and a runway show on June 6, 2009.

Flaunt, produced in association with Ten Miles Square and Project Beltway, LLC, will feature new fashion portrait work by photographers Joshua Yospyn, John Ulaszek, Meaghan Gay, and Steve Goldenberg. The work is the result of collaborations with local fashion designers Dana Greaves, Taimur Baig, Lara Akinsaya, and Will Sharp, who will showoff their talent as their clothes grace the runway.

This is something new for me so I’ve been conducting research all week in preparation. Shawn has been a fountain of knowledge for me and I really appreciate his patience with all my questions.

One often overlooked resource on the web is Flickr.  Not only is Flickr a great way to share your photos but it also provides a way to learn from others.  For example lets take Saturday’s upcoming shoot.  I plan to bring two cameras, my new 40D and my XS.  Since the 40D is new to my bag I wanted to conduct some research on how other owners used it for this type of shoot.  I logged into my Flickr account and choose Camera Finder under the Explore menu.  Choose your brand (Canon for me) and it will present you with a list of all cameras used for images in Flickr.  Choose your model (40D for me) and you’ll be presented a page with various types of information on the camera such as price, capabilities, most interesting pictures, as well as a search box.  In the search box enter the type of subject you are interested in (Fashion Show for me) and you’ll be presented a listing of photos for that subject from that camera.  Here’s the results of my search using Canon 40D and Fashion Show.

Review the results to get a feel of the compositions of your subject shots.  To get greater detail click into one of the individual shots.  Flickr provides a way to view the EXIF data if its available in the uploaded JPEG. On the right hand side below the tags will be a link saying More Properties if the EXIF is available.  Here you can see the exposure, aperture, ISO and many other settings used for that shot.

For every photowalk I go on I spend some time on Flickr getting ideas.  Its an invaluable resource that I’m surprised more people do not take advantage of.

You may want to try this before your next shoot.  Good luck with it where ever it is and wish me luck this Saturday!

Spotlight on Cooper

For this month’s spotlight I’ve decided to change it up a bit and show off the work from one of the most photogenic models ever to grace the internet.  His name is Cooper.  Just Cooper.   His unique style and personality allow him to fit within the genre of other famous one-name celebrities like Liberace, Prince, Bono and even Fabio!

Spotlight on Yo Spiff

Photographer: Yo Spiff (Steve R.)

On the web: Flickr, DPChallenge, iStockPhoto, ImageStocker

Camera(s): Canon EOS-350D Rebel XT, Canon PowerShot S5 IS, Fujifilm FinePix S700 / S5700, Nikon Coolpix L6

Location: Texas

This week the spotlight falls on a Flickr and DPChallenge celebrity known as Yo Spiff, aka Steve. Our paths first crossed in March of this year after I joined the Canon PowerShot S5 IS group on Flickr where he is a moderator. Since then I’ve watched his photostream with interest and became the receiver of many great nuggets of digital photography knowledge from him. Steve employs his craft with a humor and creativity that will draw you in and keep you coming back to see whats next.

Like many of us, Steve had an interest in photography at a young age but didn’t take it up seriously until a few years ago. When asked what got him into digital photography, he responded “I’m a tech geek and the use of all the technology involved in photography fascinates me. I’ve also been accused of loving anything with lots of buttons, and modern cameras are encrusted with fascinating clusters of buttons and switches.

Steve’s subjects range from the whimsical studio shots to captures of the world around him. He seems to have an affinity for various modes of transportation (cycling, trains, cars, and planes). He recently conducted a 30-day shoot of…wait for it…shoehorns! Yes, you heard right…shoehorns! This effort came from members of DPChallenge attempting to force, or shoehorn, an entry that didn’t quite meet the intent of the challenge. “These entries often get a lot of interesting and confused comments. There are a few people who look forward to my bizarre shoehorns, and I get some good encouragement to keep doing them.

Not only does Steve find the interesting shot, he quite often becomes it. The Flickr members of the Dallas/Fort Worth meetup’s are always on the look out for him in a compromising position. “At local Flickr meetups, it has become a semi-regular thing to post a photo of me rolling around on the ground, trying to get a perspective view of something.” (photo provided by Flickr member mskothare)

Steve opened his Flickr account in 2007 and became hooked on the online communities. Today he has become a trusted resource to many, responding to many questions on both the Flickr communities and the DPChallenge forums. His photostream on Flickr is up to 65 pages of his work. He is an admin for the Canon S5 group along with the founder and moderator of The Upgraders group on Flickr. The Upgraders has become another home for the members of the S3/S5 groups that have upgraded, or thinking of upgrading, to a DSLR.

For each spotlight I like to choose 10-20 photographs that reflects the photographer’s range. This one was especially hard to limit to just 20. After much time going back and forth I called in my wife to help me choose. Remember that the photos here are my favorites, be sure and visit Steve’s profile links above to see his full works and choose your own favorites. Here’s a small sampling:

Spotlight on bluedot11

From time to time I plan to spotlight some of the friends I’ve made online that share an interest in digital photography. No matter what their level of experience I’ve learned something from each and every one. For my first spotlight I chose the photographer I think I know the most about:

Photographer: bluedot11

On the web: Flickr

Camera(s): Canon PowerShot S5 IS

Location: Virginia

I met bluedot11 over 20 years ago but it wasn’t until recently that I discovered her love for photography. That should surprise you since I’ve been married to her for over 20 years.

She became interested in the photography collections of her friends and started following their activities online. This led to her first camera that she received for Christmas, a Kodak Z812IS Zoom. The Kodak ended up being a great camera for starting out but she soon upgraded to the Canon PowerShot S5 IS earlier this summer. She’s become a master at the Super Macro mode of the S5.

She has an eye for finding the interestingness of nature, shooting the life that grows around her. Having a deep knowledge of plants she uses it to pick out the best shots of the flowers in the area. Thanks to some prodding from her online friends, she has overcome her trepidation of all things creepy and crawly. There’s not a spider, fly, worm, caterpillar, ant, wasp, lizard, or other of God’s little creatures thats not safe from her macro lens.

Nature is not her only target. She has a unique view of the world uses it to pick out subjects that the most of us would look over. Her humor comes through with shots of Anti-Monkey Butt powder (a real product), the Brawney Man, and her collection of “Oddities”.

I might be jaded in my opinion of her so I’ll leave you with a few samples. To see more visit her at bluedot11 on Flickr.
