Guarding the Tomb of the Unknown

Tombstones I found interesting including my childhood hero Gregory “Pappy” Boyington, actor Lee Marvin, and one of the many headstones marked as Unknown. Boyington was a USMC WWII Ace in the Pacific and a Medal of Honor receipient. He is probably best known from the 1970s tv show Baa Baa Black Sheep which was based on his memoirs. I was surprised by the humble gravestone of Lee Marvin who is extremely well known and enjoyed a large fan base in the 60s and 70s from his movies. Marvin is probably best known for his roles in The Dirty Dozen and Cat Ballou which he won an Oscar for.

Another shot from the Jefferson Memorial. Look close at the statue’s head. At first I thought it was an aberration on the lens but closer shots revealed it to be spider webs. Instead of cloning them out in Photoshop I decided to leave them in for the interest factor. Not very flattering for the park service though.

My daughter and I spent a fun evening practicing our night photography in DC earlier this week. After having our first ever meal at Ben’s Chili Bowl we went looking for sights to photograph. She is a budding photographer and is now using my old Canon XS. At first she didn’t want to shoot the “normal” shots like the Capitol or any of the monuments until I showed her some unique perspectives to them. Then I couldn’t get her away from there, we didn’t get home until after 1:00am.

March Free Study

After reaching the coveted 6.0 score, by the time the voting was over I ended up with a 5.67. This shot was taken during Shawn Duffy’s Night Photowalk DC. After last month’s disaster I’m happy with this score which is my highest so far in a free study challenge.

Dublin’s “Cornhenge”

Founded in 1989 by the Dublin Arts Council, the Art in Public Places collection host a unique assortment of outdoor sculptures. One of which is the “Field of Corn” which features 109 human-sized cement ears of corn.

This is quite a sight the first time you see it. The corn sprouts from the ground in a corporate setting surrounded by office buildings and on the corner of a busy intersection. It could not look more out of place but still draws you in to look closer.

Completed in 1994 by the artist Malcolm Cochran, it was commissioned to be a reminder to the long time agricultural heritage of the area. Instead it became a local joke with residents not seeing the artistic value of giant inedible food that was created using tax dollars.

Personally I feel it adds to the unique personality that Dublin has to offer. In the next few weeks I’ll try to find the other pieces of artwork in this collection.
