National Museum of American History

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History reopens after two years of architectural renovations to shed new light on American history, literally and figuratively. The Museum has been dramatically transformed and will engage audiences of all ages. Visitors walk into a five-story skylit atrium, surrounded by artifact displays showcasing the breadth of the Museum’s three million objects from the cultural, social, technological and political history of the United States. A grand staircase now links the Museum’s first and second floors and six landmark objects located in the wings of each of the three exhibition floors help orient visitors.

At the heart of the Museum, the Star-Spangled Banner—one of the most recognized symbols of the nation—has been given a new state-of-the-art gallery and fresh interpretation.

Their grand reopening happens today followed by a weekend festival to celebrate the new look.

I drove by the museum last evening and stopped to enjoy the holographic show they are displaying.  There is a series of 9 projectors rotating through images of the American flag and other items on in the museum’s inventory.  I tried to take a few shots of it but they didn’t come out as well as I’d hope.

During the renovation, some of the more popular items were put on display in a small hall of the Air and Space Museum.  The following shots were taken by my wife with her Kodak 812IS in March during our visit there.
