Colvin Run Mill
Colvin Run Mill is just off Route 7 north of Tyson’s Corner. It makes for a great stop for me on my way home from work. I stopped by Tuesday in the late afternoon to grab a few shots with the Rebel.
The mill has become a favored place for my family over the years. As a Cub Scout leader, I took the den there a few times to see presentations about such subjects as making maple syrup and blacksmithing. The Christmas program at the mill is a must attend event every year. I recently had a friend from the Philippines, who is also very heavy into digital photography, visit the USA for the first time. I made sure to stop by the mill for him to see and photograph before taking him to Dulles for his flight home.
This site hosts the mill with a working waterwheel, a barn with exhibits of the tools uses in the 1800s along with an adjacent blacksmith shop, the original miller’s house built in 1809, and a general store. I especially love the store for the old fashioned candy, some of which is extremely hard to find anywhere else.
If you’re interested in history, looking for an out of the ordinary location to take pictures, or just want a spend an hour or so on a walk then stop by Colvin Run Mill. Its just down the road and maybe on your way home from work.
