USA Button Poll

One of the benefits of my position at WorthPoint is being involved in what many would consider “cool” projects, like our widget and mobile app development efforts. We recently worked with one of our Worthologists, Jim Warlick of USA Button Poll, to create a widget for his site. Jim started the USA Button Poll during the 1988 presidential election and the results of his button sales have predicted the winner of the popular vote every election since. We’re waiting to see if he keeps his streak alive this year.

Skyline Drive

Last weekend Sherri and I took a sightseeing drive on Skyline Drive through the Shenandoah National Park. I highly recommend taking this trip soon if you are anywhere near the Northern Virginia area. While this is always an enjoyable trip it is especially dramatic at this time of year. Skyline Drive is spotted with numerous overlooks with extraordinary views of the valleys below. Its hard to find a bad view or subject with a camera.

I’m sorry for my lack of posts the past week. My job at WorthPoint has kept me busier than normal with an upcoming event that we hope to be able to announce soon. If you’re interested in Antiques and Collectibles then head over to WorthPoint now and register on the site now. I’m leaving tomorrow for a trip to Colubus, OH to discuss our organizations focus on social media and communities. This is a subject that has kept my interest for the past few years and I am excited to be able to put my experience into action. Hopefully I’ll get some time to take some photos of Columbus as well.

Enough of the ramblings. Here’s a few more photos from Skyline Drive. Enjoy these and look in the next few days for the ones taken when Sherri and I decided to take a hike through the wilderness there.

Autumn Hues Picture Style

In a previous post I talked about the various Picture Styles available for Canon’s Digital Photo Professional software. The Autumn Hues style has become a favorite of mine, especially with the abundance of photos available at this time of year for this treatment.

Canon describes the Autumn Hues style like this “The Autumn Hue Picture Style file stands out the beauty of autumn such as red maple leaves and maidenhair trees. Not only does it reproduces yellow and red vividly, but it also considers the balance of blue sky and greens and unites the colorfulness and delicacy.”

Below you can see a photo recently taken at Shenandoah National Park and how I use the style.
Original untouched jpg using Landscape style in the camera:

After applying the Autumn Hues picture style through DPP (slightly cropped with no other modifications):

You can see how the yellows and reds are more prominent in this one. One downside though is that it also enhanced the reds in the clouds which I didn’t care for. The next one was slightly modified in Elements to tone down the red sky, enhance the blues and adjust the levels in the trees slightly.

This was probably not the best photo to display this style but you can get an overview of what it can do from them. Play with it yourself and let me know what you think. You can download Autumn Hues and find installation instructions here.

Here are the three photos side by side for comparison:

Spotlight on Yo Spiff

Photographer: Yo Spiff (Steve R.)

On the web: Flickr, DPChallenge, iStockPhoto, ImageStocker

Camera(s): Canon EOS-350D Rebel XT, Canon PowerShot S5 IS, Fujifilm FinePix S700 / S5700, Nikon Coolpix L6

Location: Texas

This week the spotlight falls on a Flickr and DPChallenge celebrity known as Yo Spiff, aka Steve. Our paths first crossed in March of this year after I joined the Canon PowerShot S5 IS group on Flickr where he is a moderator. Since then I’ve watched his photostream with interest and became the receiver of many great nuggets of digital photography knowledge from him. Steve employs his craft with a humor and creativity that will draw you in and keep you coming back to see whats next.

Like many of us, Steve had an interest in photography at a young age but didn’t take it up seriously until a few years ago. When asked what got him into digital photography, he responded “I’m a tech geek and the use of all the technology involved in photography fascinates me. I’ve also been accused of loving anything with lots of buttons, and modern cameras are encrusted with fascinating clusters of buttons and switches.

Steve’s subjects range from the whimsical studio shots to captures of the world around him. He seems to have an affinity for various modes of transportation (cycling, trains, cars, and planes). He recently conducted a 30-day shoot of…wait for it…shoehorns! Yes, you heard right…shoehorns! This effort came from members of DPChallenge attempting to force, or shoehorn, an entry that didn’t quite meet the intent of the challenge. “These entries often get a lot of interesting and confused comments. There are a few people who look forward to my bizarre shoehorns, and I get some good encouragement to keep doing them.

Not only does Steve find the interesting shot, he quite often becomes it. The Flickr members of the Dallas/Fort Worth meetup’s are always on the look out for him in a compromising position. “At local Flickr meetups, it has become a semi-regular thing to post a photo of me rolling around on the ground, trying to get a perspective view of something.” (photo provided by Flickr member mskothare)

Steve opened his Flickr account in 2007 and became hooked on the online communities. Today he has become a trusted resource to many, responding to many questions on both the Flickr communities and the DPChallenge forums. His photostream on Flickr is up to 65 pages of his work. He is an admin for the Canon S5 group along with the founder and moderator of The Upgraders group on Flickr. The Upgraders has become another home for the members of the S3/S5 groups that have upgraded, or thinking of upgrading, to a DSLR.

For each spotlight I like to choose 10-20 photographs that reflects the photographer’s range. This one was especially hard to limit to just 20. After much time going back and forth I called in my wife to help me choose. Remember that the photos here are my favorites, be sure and visit Steve’s profile links above to see his full works and choose your own favorites. Here’s a small sampling:
